New Ecodesign regulation applies from 1 July 2021 for motors and variable speed drives.

ASERCOM, the association of European manufacturers of refrigeration and air conditioning components, has published guidance on the product information requirements of motors and variable speed drives integrated in refrigeration systems. The Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 for electric motors and variable speed drives (VSD) will apply gradually from 1 July 2021.

In principle, integrated motors and drives whose energy performance cannot be tested independently of the product in which they are integrated are exempt from the minimum energy efficiency requirements. These are in particular stators – rotors integrated in hermetic and semi-hermetic compressors, drives in hermetic and semi-hermetic compressors and tailored drives that are used outside the refrigerant compressor but cannot be controlled on their own. Nevertheless, special product information obligations apply. The ASERCOM Statement describes in detail how manufacturers comply with these obligations.
