Brussels – ASERCOM will partner with the Single Pair Ethernet System Alliance and establish a joint working group from both parties to identify use cases for SPE to leverage the technology acceptance of ASERCOM Members worldwide. The common scope of this collaboration is:

  • Have broader and more open discussion in the working group compared to talking only to a single manufacturer or vendor.
  • Share information within the European Refrigeration Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Industry (RACHP) and – ideally – use similar technologies. Today almost everyone is using Modbus RTU. This limits R&D spendings as the industry has not to integrate many interfaces. If the successor of Modbus RTU becomes Single Pair Ethernet, the industry will continue to have this advantage.
  • Prepare for the future: Modbus RTU has severe limitations in cyber security, bandwidth and usability. Ethernet is today’s standard technology. Single pair ethernet can become a good compromise between cost and technology in future.
  • Hold regular meetings governed by steering committee members assigned by both sides.
  • White Papers Publishing:
Organize an expert sub-committee to write and publish white papers on SPE for ASERCOM users.

Single Pair Ethernet is generating a lot of interest among automotive, industrial and building automation applications because of its ability to cost effectively transmit power and data over a single pair of copper wires over distances as long as 1,000 meters. SPE cabling’s small size, light weight and extended reach make it an ideal technology to support the billions of connected devices and sensors being installed to support Internet of Things (IoT) and building automation systems.

« SPE technology is a potential game changer for Industry 4.0,” said Simon Seereiner chairman of the System Alliance. “To help with adoption, it’s important to define the technology ecosystem within the global market. Working with ASERCOM our two organizations can present a unified message.”

“Digitization is a very important and also critical task in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps,” said Dr. Christian Ellwein, co-convenor of the ASERCOM working group Electronics and CEO of the KRIWAN Group. “To achieve the global goals of de-carbonization, technology and innovation are essential. We can only become more sustainable if we focus on innovation. Secure digitization and communication are key for this.”

About the Single Pair Ethernet System Alliance
The Single Pair Ethernet System Alliance is an open consortium of leading technology companies and scientific organisations from various industries and fields of application. Manufacturers of sensors, cables, connectors, measuring devices, semiconductors, switches and end devices work together to establish SPE solutions for a wide range of applications.

Our goal is to achieve technical maturity and broad market acceptance, providing users with the highest level of future security. Our mission includes promoting exchange between experts from various technology areas, building up know-how for fast and reliable technology implementation, and demonstrating the holistic benefits of the Ethernet-only approach.
