ASERCOM Energy Efficiency Award 2010

Danfoss wins Efficiency Award 2010

In 2001, a study initiated by the German Federal Government came up with a result that surprised the industry: 14% of the entire national consumption of electricity is being used by the air conditioning and refrigeration sector (including heat pumps). Against this background, ASERCOM decided to promote an Energy Efficiency Award every other year in order to reward energy saving innovations with a good market prospect.

The issues of atmospheric ozone depletion, global climate change and future energy shortages have touched the refrigerating, air conditioning and heat pump field significantly in the past decades. Meanwhile, these new challenges have led to products and systems with an improved environmental performance in all applications.

In sponsoring the Energy Efficiency Award, ASERCOM supports such efforts and in this year's application process, a considerable number of concepts that deserved serious consideration was again submitted. These were thoroughly viewed and judged by an international jury of professors, who have unanimously selected Danfoss A/S, business unit Automatic Controls, for the ASERCOM Energy Efficiency Award 2010.

Danfoss is a well known company and an established manufacturer of, among others, controls for refrigerating, AC and heat pump equipment. The company now brings up a new and innovative compact controller for glass door vending units. It is a mini computer which steers, optimizes and guards the equipment as it is influenced by shop opening hours, customer behaviour, product requirements, surrounding temperatures and other factors at choice. Thanks to the latest generation CPU this innovation could be realized. Tests on a standard one door glass merchandiser, in which the conventional control system was replaced by the new controller, revealed significant energy savings. By offering a controller that masters a vast number of parameters and incorporates "intelligence" at costs comparable with the existing refrigeration controls, Danfoss expects large energy savings in the target market, where millions of units are in operation worldwide. Danfoss has prepared the release of the controller meanwhile.

This innovation and the related outlook can be judged to fully meet the terms of the ASERCOM Energy Efficiency Award.
